How hierarchy works

The hierarchy shows how classifications are organized from broad subjects to increasingly specific ones.

• Parent — the broader classification above the current classification.
• Child — a more specific classification below the current classification.
• Sibling — another classification with the same immediate parent.

This example moves from the broad Concrete division to the more specific Concrete Reinforcing classification.

Browse a classification

1. Search the standards and open a classification.
2. Confirm the standard and edition.
3. Open an available parent or child.
4. Use the new tab to explore it without losing your starting place.

Understand the classification

When you want to begin with a broad division and progressively expand its children, use Division Hierarchies.

Choose the right level of detail

Stop at the level that matches your task. A broad classification is useful for discovery. A more specific child is useful when your project information supports that detail.
