What is a transition?
When viewing MasterFormat 2020, CSI Dynamic Standards can show whether a classification changed in MasterFormat 2026. These relationships are called Transitions.
A transition shows how a classification from an older edition relates to its classification or classifications in a newer edition. Transitions support upgrades between editions.

32 00 00 — Site Improvements
The classification number remains 32 00 00, but the title changed from Exterior Improvements in MasterFormat 2020 to Site Improvements in MasterFormat 2026.
Not every transition is a title change. The information shown depends on what changed between editions.
Where transitions appear
Division Hierarchies
When browsing MasterFormat 2020, classifications with transition information can display Transitions. Select it to see the corresponding MasterFormat 2026 classification or classifications and available information about the type of change.
CSI Dynamic Standards search
Open a MasterFormat 2020 classification in the main search experience and look for Transition to MF2026. This lets you review edition changes alongside the classification's hierarchy and other available relationships.
When would I use a transition?
Use Transitions when specifications, project documents, software, databases, or other information contain MasterFormat 2020 classifications and you need to understand how those classifications should be handled with MasterFormat 2026.

Find the newer classification
- Select MasterFormat 2020 and open the classification you need to review.
- Select Transitions or find Transition to MF2026.
- Open an available MasterFormat 2026 classification.
- Compare the number, title, hierarchy, and additional information before updating your work.
Important things to know
A transition can lead to one classification, several classifications, or no available classification in MasterFormat 2026. Keep the edition labels visible while reviewing the change.
