Quick answer
UniFormat® 2010 Edition · OIR 26.1 describes UniFormat information in the 26.1 Operational Information Release of CSI Dynamic Standards℠. The release reflects an initial framework for expanding classification beyond the traditional Building Entity, together with improved cross-standard relationships. It is not an announcement that a completed new UniFormat edition has replaced UniFormat 2010.
A framework under active development
CSI's UniFormat Maintenance Task Team is developing the expansion under the oversight of the CSI Standards Steering Committee. The release notes describe ongoing standards development through CSI's established governance and consensus process. The proposed entity structures are a beginning framework, and sections are reserved for further development.
That distinction matters when discussing the release with a client or project team. Availability of a developing framework in the digital environment does not make every proposed classification a completed standard. The release notes specifically retain UniFormat 2010 as a stable reference for CSI Member Subscribers. Record whether a project reference is to the underlying edition or to information reviewed in a particular OIR.
Transportation characterizations
The initial framework described in the release notes includes Table 02 – Roadway Entities, Table 03 – Bridge Entities, Table 04 – Railway Entities, and Table 05 – Airfield Entities. These headings describe the transportation portion of the proposed UniFormat expansion framework. They should be read in that context, rather than assumed to be a list of OmniClass® table names.
For an infrastructure team, the useful first question is whether the developing structure addresses the type of entity being planned. The next question is what level of classification is actually available and appropriate to use. Review the published release scope and the selected information in CDS before incorporating a reference into planning documentation.
Utility and service characterizations
The same framework includes Table 14 – Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Entities; Table 17 – Electric Power System Entities; Table 18 – Oil and Gas Entities; and Table 19 – Communication Entities. These areas are being developed concurrently because related entities share elements, terminology, and coordination requirements.
Future entities mentioned in the release notes are subject to CSI's editorial priorities and review. They are not a promise that every infrastructure classification is complete in 26.1. Treat gaps and reserved sections as part of the stated development status, and keep project-specific descriptions separate from governed classification references.
From planning elements to work results
OIR 26.1 also improves navigation from UniFormat elements to related MasterFormat® and OmniClass information. An element can involve several work results. Review the related classifications individually rather than replacing an element reference with a single section number and assuming the scope is equivalent.
The crosswalk structure includes PPD Track - UniFormat alongside General and OmniModel. The crosswalk guide explains how to approach these relationships. For the work-results side, see MasterFormat 2026 Edition · OIR 26.1; for lifecycle classification, see OmniClass 2.2 · OIR 26.1. The shared release overview explains which changes concern the platform and which concern the information presented within it.
Release date, standards authority, and access
CIN published OIR 26.1 on September 22, 2026 for information delivered through CSI Dynamic Standards. An Operational Information Release updates the digital information environment. CSI continues to govern, develop, and approve the underlying standard editions through its established consensus process. An OIR number should therefore be recorded separately from the standard name and edition when documenting a project reference.
