Common questions

Accessing MasterFormat®

What is MasterFormat®?

MasterFormat® is CSI’s widely used standard for organizing construction work information. It gives project teams a consistent way to reference and coordinate the information used across specifications, products, and project workflows.

What are CSI divisions in construction?

CSI divisions are the broad work-result categories used by MasterFormat to organize construction specifications and related project information. A division is the top-level context; detailed specification sections sit beneath that structure.

Are CSI codes the same as building codes?

No. “CSI codes” is common search language for construction classification numbers, especially MasterFormat references. They organize project information; they are not building regulations or code requirements.

Are the legacy 16 construction divisions still current?

The 16-division structure appears in historical project records and older MasterFormat editions. Current work should use the edition required by the project and verify its division and section references in CSI Dynamic Standards.

Where can I access MasterFormat®?

MasterFormat® is available in the CSI Dynamic Standards platform.

Is a license required for complete MasterFormat® access?

A company license is required for licensed standards access in the CDS Platform. Availability may vary by standard, edition, subscription, and licensing terms. Sign in or contact The Construction Standard to confirm access to a specific edition.
