What MasterFormat Does
MasterFormat provides the familiar hierarchy of broad divisions and detailed sections used to organize construction work results. Project teams use those references in project manuals, drawing notes, estimates, bid packages, product information, submittal logs, closeout records, and software systems.
The classification identifies the context of the work. It does not supply the technical requirements that make a project specification complete. Teams should verify the current title, hierarchy, and edition before reusing a number from an older project or internal list.
What SectionFormat Does
SectionFormat provides a consistent framework for arranging information within a specification section. The common three-part structure is:
- Part 1—General: Administrative and procedural requirements specific to the section
- Part 2—Products: Product, material, system, performance, fabrication, and source requirements
- Part 3—Execution: Examination, preparation, installation, application, field quality control, protection, and related execution requirements
Not every article applies to every section, and the standard does not write the project-specific language. Its value is predictable organization. Contractors, estimators, manufacturers, and reviewers can find similar kinds of requirements in similar places across the project manual.
What PageFormat Does
PageFormat addresses presentation conventions for specification text. It supports consistent approaches to headings, article and paragraph hierarchy, numbering, spacing, margins, headers, footers, and related page-level details. Consistent presentation makes long project manuals easier to navigate and reduces ambiguity about how requirements relate to each other.
PageFormat is not a visual brand system and does not determine the project's technical requirements. It provides document discipline so the content remains readable and usable as it moves between authors, reviewers, bidders, and construction teams.
A Practical Example
Suppose a team is preparing a section for a defined roofing work result. MasterFormat helps identify the appropriate current section context. SectionFormat guides where administrative requirements, product requirements, and execution requirements appear. PageFormat guides how headings, paragraphs, references, and page information are presented. The specifier still selects and writes the actual requirements for the project.
This separation is especially important when evaluating templates. A blank three-part template may reflect SectionFormat structure, but it does not contain a complete master specification. A list of MasterFormat numbers can organize a table of contents, but it does not provide the content inside those sections.
