What is construction classification?

What is construction classification? Learn the answer and how CSI Dynamic Standards supports construction teams with MasterFormat, UniFormat, and OmniClass.

This is a foundational question about how construction classification systems work—and understanding it makes every workflow that touches specifications, cost codes, BIM, or project documentation more effective.

The CSI Classification Ecosystem

The construction industry relies on three complementary classification systems maintained by CSI (Construction Specifications Institute):

MasterFormat — Organizes construction information by work results (products, materials, activities). Used in specifications, cost codes, submittals, bid packages, and project documentation. 50 divisions with six-digit section numbers.

UniFormat — Organizes construction information by building elements (functional components). Used in early design, conceptual estimating, and owner project requirements. Element-based rather than product-based.

OmniClass — A comprehensive taxonomy of 15 tables classifying the entire built environment. Used in BIM, asset management, and lifecycle classification. Incorporates both UniFormat (Table 21) and MasterFormat (Table 22).

How They Work Together

These three standards are designed as an integrated system. Information flows from UniFormat in early design, to MasterFormat in construction documents, to OmniClass in BIM and facility operations. CSI Dynamic Standards includes governed crosswalks that map these relationships authoritatively.

CSI Dynamic Standards

CSI Dynamic Standards combines MasterFormat, UniFormat, and OmniClass into one accessible, efficient, and always-current digital edition. The Construction Standard is authorized by CSI to provide access for today's digital workflows. CSI continues to steward and govern the standards.

Features include always-current content, edition tracking, governed crosswalks, Standards Tree and Navigator, and firm-wide access under one subscription. Pricing is based on company type and company revenue range.

Why This Matters

When project teams use consistent, current classification standards, the result is fewer RFIs, less rework, and more accurate project documentation. Even one avoided RFI or re-bid can outweigh months of subscription cost.

COMMON QUESTIONS
MasterFormat classifies by work results (products/activities), UniFormat by building elements (functional components), and OmniClass provides a comprehensive taxonomy spanning the entire built environment. CSI Dynamic Standards includes governed crosswalks between all three.
CSI (Construction Specifications Institute) continues to steward and govern MasterFormat, UniFormat, and OmniClass. The Construction Standard is authorized by CSI to provide digital access through CSI Dynamic Standards.
CSI periodically publishes updated editions reflecting changes in construction technology, materials, and methods. CSI Dynamic Standards provides always-current content that updates when CSI publishes, plus edition tracking to compare versions.
