# Browse the classification hierarchy

Start with a broad classification and move to more specific classifications beneath it.

## How hierarchy works

The hierarchy shows how classifications are organized from broad subjects to increasingly specific ones.

> Think of the hierarchy as moving from a broad subject toward the level of detail you need.

- **Parent** — the broader classification above the current classification.

- **Child** — a more specific classification below the current classification.

- **Sibling** — another classification with the same immediate parent.

This example moves from the broad Concrete division to the more specific Concrete Reinforcing classification.

## Browse a classification

1. Search the standards and open a classification.

2. Confirm the standard and edition.

3. Open an available parent or child.

4. Use the new tab to explore it without losing your starting place.

## Understand the classification

When a MasterFormat 2026 classification has additional guidance, select **More** to see what it includes, what it does not include, definitions, notes, related classifications, and available numbering guidance. ## Choose the right level of detail

Stop at the level that matches your task. A broad classification is useful for discovery. A more specific child is useful when your project information supports that detail.
