# Understand the standards

Learn the differences between MasterFormat, UniFormat, and OmniClass and how each organizes construction information.

## Choose a standard

### MasterFormat

Organizes construction information by work results.

**Commonly used for:** specifications, products, construction activities, estimating, and procurement.

`03 30 00 — Cast-in-Place Concrete` shows a specific concrete work result identified by its MasterFormat number and title.

### UniFormat

Organizes information by the functional elements and systems that make up a building or facility.

**Commonly used for:** planning, early design, assemblies, systems, and conceptual estimating.

`A10 — Foundations` groups foundation-related work by the function it performs in the building.

### OmniClass

Uses multiple tables to organize different kinds of information about the built environment.

**Commonly used for:** spaces, products, entities, activities, and other project information.

`Table 23 — Products` organizes construction products as one type of built-environment information.

## Which one should I use?

- If you are working with specifications, work results, or familiar CSI section numbers, start with MasterFormat.

- If you are organizing a building by systems or functional elements, start with UniFormat.

- If you need to classify another kind of built-environment information, explore the appropriate OmniClass table.

These are common starting points, not limits on how each standard can be used.

## A shared project language

CSI has worked with industry experts since 1948 to build and maintain MasterFormat, UniFormat, and OmniClass. Together, the systems provide a consistent language for information exchanged among architects, specifiers, engineers, owners, estimators, contractors, manufacturers, and facilities teams.

That shared structure helps preserve meaning as work moves from concept and design into documentation, bidding, construction, handover, and operations.

## Why consistency matters

Consistent classification helps teams coordinate the same scope across people, documents, and software.

- Reduce rework, coordination gaps, and unnecessary back-and-forth.

- Improve estimating accuracy and cost transparency.

- Support clearer staffing, responsibilities, and handoffs.

- Make project information more predictable and maintainable.

## Carry classifications across project stages

The same classification structure can follow a project from design criteria and master specifications through BIM, estimating, procurement, construction management, and facility operations.

When a scope item is defined consistently, downstream teams can trace it across documents and workflows even when different consultants, contractors, or operators perform the work.

## Connected digital standards

Construction information changes faster than static documents can accommodate. A connected digital model can deliver coordinated improvements to metadata, relationships, search capabilities, APIs, and software integrations without waiting for another static publication cycle.

As those relationships become more connected, estimating, scheduling, BIM, and cost-coordination tools require less manual reconciliation. CSI's consensus process continues to govern and approve the standards and their editions.
